Story

Sophie and Lucy, two 18 year old girls from Haywards Heath, have spent the evening in their local pub celebrating Lucy's 18th birthday. They had only planned to have a few, and so Sophie decided to drive to make sure that they both got home okay, it was the middle of winter and far too cold to be walking home. However, as the night progressed and the conversation flowed, the pair found themselves having much more to drink that originally planned. Lucy tried her best to convince Sophie not to drive, but despite her attempts Sophie was adamant she was fine and so the pair headed back to the car.

On the drive home Sophie struggled to concentrate on the road ahead of her, and on more than one occasion swerved to the other side of the road. Her phone went off multiple times beside her, and she couldn't resist the urge to check it. Taking her eyes off the road to lean down and feel in her bag, she didn't notice the sharp bending quickly approaching until it was too late. Looking back up at the last possible moment she sharply spun the car in an attempt to make the turn, but the combination of her high speed and the tightness of the bend caused the car to flip, rolling over on its side multiple times before coming to a halt on its roof. Both were thrown from the vehicle, and Lucy was killed instantly.

The woodiness, limited light around the winding roads and the time of night means that it is a few hours before they are found and am ambulance called, by which time the extent of her injuries meant that Sophie had fallen unconscious and slipped into a coma.

Over the next few days Sophie remains unresponsive to any medical treatment, and the efforts of her family to get her to wake up. While unconscious, Sophie tries hard to piece together the events of that night and figure out what happened. As she begins to remember more and more, it becomes clear that she is at fault. Her intoxication seriously impaired her judgment and ability to concentrate, and her phone meant that her attention was diverted. Realising that her best friends death is entirely on her shoulders, Sophie's heart rate begins to rise rapidly before her eyes snap open.
